International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

The United Nations in Nepal, in collaboration with the Blue Diamond Society, observed the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia by hoisting the symbolic rainbow flag at the UN House, Kathmandu on 17 May 2017.

Valerie Julliand, the UN Resident Coordinator for Nepal, highlighting the emergence of new patterns of family in the changing world emphasized that, “Love Makes a Family.” She further elucidated that the essence of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is that no one is left behind and that all humans are free and equal.  
 
The Honourable Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare, Kumar Khadka emphasized that Nepal, guided by the principle of inclusion, protects the rights of sexual and gender minorities. He underscored Nepal’s commitment to this issue.

Mohna Ansari, Honourable Member of National Human Right Commission, (NHRC), echoing similar sentiments expressed that greater awareness on the issues of sexual monitories was essential and appreciated the Government of Nepal for ensuring the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex  (LGBTI) in the Constitution.

The celebration was well attended by representatives from UN agencies, the government, civil society organizations and members of rainbow community. The LGBTI community and their families expressed the challenges they face and called for the need to help them lead a dignified life in the society.
