In Nepal the estimated HIV positive in the country, according to UNAIDS is 72,000-75,000. If we analyze the reported data of about 9,000 HIV positive, approximately 94 per cent belong to the productive age group of 15-49. The HIV programmes should effort therefore focus on ensuring continuation of job after the identification of HIV status as well as creation of employment opportunities for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) who are unemployed for various reasons.

A major AIDS epidemic in Nepal can only be prevented through a strategic response targeting those population groups who are particularly at risk and vulnerable to HIV. In line with the priorities set out in the National HIV/AIDS Strategy for 2006-2011, it is therefore crucially important to enhance HIV prevention efforts among migrant workers.

Based on this, the evaluation has made recommendations to the ILO, the donor, and the national stakeholders on the sustainability and future effectiveness of project interventions.

National policy document on HIV/AIDS in the workplace is formulated for strategic intervention as a guideline for collaboration among employers, workers and employees, and all other stakeholders, on HIV/AIDS-related problem management in the workplace. It will serve as a directive for the prevention of HIV, and minimization of its effects, as part of the Government of Nepal’s commitment towards reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS.
