Despite earlier expectations that Arab States would be relatively insulated from the adverse effects of the global economic crisis, many of these economies have felt the impact of declining oil revenues, reduced foreign direct investment, and diminishing worker remittances.

Employment and training oriented strategies have been implemented in several countries, while others focussed on social protection and social security policies, as the livelihoods of growing numbers of precarious workers may come under further threat.
