JAKARTA (Joint Press Release): Mayors across the country together with relevant stakeholders from the government ministries, organizations of people with disabilities, workers’ and employers’ organizations and other organizations will gather in Jakarta on 31st October to attend a UN-sponsored High-Level Seminar which aims to promote inclusive cities across the country.

More than 100 participants will attend the one-day meeting jointly organised by UNESCO, ILO, WHO and the Association of Indonesian Municipalities (APEKSI). The Minister of National Planning Development (Bappenas), HE. Prof. Dr. Bambang P.S Brodjonegoro will open the Seminar titled “The High-Level Meeting of Mayors for Inclusive Cities.”

The Seminar will feature mayors from across the country presenting the policies and initiatives that enable positive transformations in their cities. To strengthen the commitment of Mayors, the Seminar will be marked with the signing of Charter of the Network of Indonesian Mayors for Inclusive Cities, aimed to respect and support the involvement and participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of life across cities in the country.

The Seminar will also generate an exchange between the senior level national officials and city authorities about effective ways to engage the cities in the realization of Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) framework, implementing the national law on disability of 2016, and replicating good practices in disability inclusion in cities throughout the country.

In addition, the Seminar is organized to showcase the results of the UN project on Promoting the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) in Indonesia and to chart the future for the Network of Mayors for Inclusive Cities.

UNESCO, ILO and WHO, in partnership with the national entities such as APEKSI and various disability rights NGOs, are working with the Indonesian government to promote social inclusion of persons with disabilities. Funded by the UN Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD, phase II), the joint project has made significant contribution to the national and local efforts towards disability inclusion.
