JAKARTA (ILO News) – Today’s young people are known as the best educated generation ever and have clear ideas about fulfilling their aspirations at work and in society. However, the world is facing a growing youth unemployment crisis. In many economies, young people are 2.8 times likely to be unemployed than adults but in Indonesia youth are 4.6 times more likely to be unemployed than their adult counterparts.

To further discuss the high-potential and the important role of youth in society, the International Labour Organization (ILO) will organize an interactive discussion on youth employment titled “The Future is Yours: Bridging the Gap of Work for Indonesian Youth” on Saturday, 29 October 2016, at Museum Nasional, Jakarta, from 10.00-12.00 WIB. The discussion is conducted in conjunction with the commemoration of the 71th Anniversary of the United Nations.

The key speakers for this interactive talk include inspiring young speakers Surya Sahetapy, a young disability advocate and Vania Santoso, young socio-preneur known for her eco-fashion business named HeySTARTIC. They will share their life experiences, aspirations and achievements to further inspire other Indonesian youth to reach for their own potentials.

Therefore, targeted to youth, this interactive discussion aims at inspiring young Indonesians to make the best use of their potentials and to be the active member of the society. This event also provides a venue for participants to exchange experiences, challenges and hopes on how to smooth the transition from school-to-work and how to create their own jobs through entrepreneurship.

The ILO has had a long-standing commitment to promote decent work for youth. Supported by a unique tripartite structure that brings together the key players in the world of work, ILO’s activities on youth employment around the world, including in Indonesia, span over advocacy, knowledge development and dissemination, policy and technical advice and capacity building services.

The ILO’s dedication to youth employment is in line with the Government of Indonesia’s policies towards the promotion of youth employment. The Government of Indonesia is promoting job creation and sustaining economic growth, and youth are a priority group as identified in the Medium-Term Development Plan. Indonesia has been committed to the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, aimed to achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all, including youth.
