Press release | Jakarta, Indonesia | 13 December 2014
KUPANG (ILO News) – The Director-General of the International Labour Organization, Guy Ryder, is set to attend labour talks and tour a village supported by an ILO Decent Work project during his visit on 13 December to Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) Province in Indonesia.

Ryder will visit the village of Kupang, which is part of an ILO/NTT government programme put in place under the Decent Work for Food Security Project.

Ryder will meet Kupang villagers, many of whom work in livestock, maize and seaweed production to earn most of their income. He will learn more about the impact of these activities on their living conditions.

The project promotes the sustainable livelihoods of workers and their families by helping to drive job creation and boost income and productivity.

Aside from his field visit, Ryder will meet with the Governor of the NTT Province, H.E. Frans Lebu Raya. The Director-General will also participate in the provincial tripartite meeting to discuss labour and employment opportunities and challenges.

Food insecurity

Food insecurity, due to severe climactic factors, is one of the biggest constraints to development in NTT Province.

Although the Government of NTT promotes agricultural production and has adopted protection measures for its farmers, the growth rate of the agriculture sector remains low compared with trade and services.

The Decent Work programme focuses on four selected districts: Timur Tengah Selatan (TTS), Kab. Kupang, Kab. Belu, dan Kab. Sumba Timur. In the first three districts, the programme concentrates on livestock and maize production while in Sumba Timur on seaweed cultivation.

In addition to Indonesia, the programme also runs in Kenya, Malawi and Myanmar.

The ILO has identified “Decent Work in the Rural Economy” as one of its Areas of Critical Importance.
