Press release | Jakarta, Indonesia | 07 December 2012
JAKARTA (Joint Press Release): To commemorate the 2012 Human Rights Day, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Indonesia, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Terre des Hommes will host a film screening and a panel discussion on Child Labour: “Aku, masa Depanmu Jakarta!” on Monday, 10 December 2012, from 15.00 – 18.00 at the Erasmus Huis Jakarta.

The film screening and panel discussion aim to raise awareness of the right of every child to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself/herself and of his/her family, the right to education and protection against factors that hamper the full enjoyment of those rights, such as child labour.
The film highlights three forms of child labour in Jakarta (children working on dumpsites, on the streets and as domestic workers).

The event will be officially opened by Mr. Tjeerd de Zwaan, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Indonesia, and Mr. Mudji Handaya, Director General of Labour Inspection, Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration.

The film highlights three forms of child labour in Jakarta (children working on dumpsites, on the streets and as domestic workers). The films were made in cooperation with ILO and Terre des Hommes.

The panel discussion features Mr. Deded Sukandar SH.MH., Head of DKI Jakarta Office of Manpower and Transmigration, Mrs. Ida Ruwaida, Sociologist at the University of Indonesia, Mrs. Wardah Hafidz, Human Rights Activist from the Urban Poor Consortium, and Ms. Dian Herdiany, Chair of the Kampung Halaman Foundation. The discussion will focus on possible solutions for child labour in Jakarta.

The ILO estimates that 215 million children worldwide are child labourers. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Bureau of Statistics documented that in 2009 there were 2.5 million child labourers between the ages of 5 and 17. Many of them work long hours, often in dangerous conditions, harming their physical, mental and social development. They are also either denied educational opportunities that would give them a better future, or they are obliged to balance education with work.

The ILO is the United Nations specialized agency dealing with work and work-related issues. The event is being supported by the ILO through its Child Labour and Education Project, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. The Project aims to strengthen the policy level linkages between work on child labour and education, leading to actions that will improve the opportunities for those in or vulnerable to child labour to benefit from education.

Children's aid organisation Terre des Hommes is passionately dedicated to stop child exploitation in developing countries, taking a goal and result-oriented approach. For this reason, Terre des Hommes Netherlands supports 250 projects, which are developed, established and implemented by local project partners. The four regional offices in Indonesia, India, Kenya and Bolivia are responsible for directly supervising the projects and help the project partners improve their professionalism (www.terredeshommes.nl).
