JAKARTA (Joint Press Release): The UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre (UNDP APRC), International Labour Organization (ILO), and the United Nations Indigenous Peoples Partnership (UNIPP) are jointly hosting a two-day Regional Workshop on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, on Monday – Tuesday, 19 – 20 November, at the Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta. This joint-workshop is organized as part of regional programmes of United Nations Indigenous Peoples’ Partnership, consisting of five UN agencies, namely UNDP, OHCHR, ILO, UNICEF, and UNFPA.

The workshop will be officially opened by HE. Prof. Dr. Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, Head of President’s Delivery Unit for Development Monitoring and Oversight as the Keynote Speaker, along with the opening speech of Mr El-Mostafa Benlamih, UN Resident Coordinator on behalf of the UN Country Team in Indonesia.

The workshop will provide a neutral forum for dialogue and knowledge sharing among relevant stakeholders on existing initiatives, challenges, lessons learned, opportunities, and reform priorities in protecting the rights of masyarakat adat, including the framework of the Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) with a particular attention to safeguards for forest-dependent populations.

The workshop will review the existing national policy and legislation framework concerning masyarakat adat, including the draft law on masyarakat adat currently being reviewed at the House of Representative; share information on the existing international standards and guidelines concerning protection of indigenous peoples’ rights; and facilitate critical discussions on legislative and policy issues on land and natural resources.

Furthermore, the workshop will pay attention to vulnerable groups within masyarakat adat, by discussing issues of violence against indigenous women and protection of indigenous children, with participation of UNFPA, UNICEF, and National Commission on Violence Against Women in Indonesia. It also has a regional knowledge-exchange component, as it brings together participants not only from Indonesia, but also from several countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Nepal, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and the Philippines, in order to share their experiences and lessons learned in working on indigenous peoples’ issues.

Lastly, the workshop will reflect on the rights and equity concerns to be integrated into the Post-2015/Post-MDG development framework, in connection with indigenous peoples’ issues, from the regional perspective. This workshop also reflects UN’s commitment to providing a neutral space for dialogue, knowledge-sharing and partnership building on important issues for inclusive human development in Indonesia.
