ILO organized a two-day workshop on 22-23 Feb 2017 for the Trade Unions in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) for capacity development as well as charting out a plan for strengthening of Trade Unions in AJK with a focus on leadership development, institutional strengthening, financial sustainability and expanded coverage.

The ILO in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development and with the financial assistance of the European Union organized a tri-partite plus workshop for the Provincial Tripartite Consultative Committees of Baluchistan and Sindh provinces. The workshop fostered greater understanding of core international labour standards and has helped in evolving a national action plan to strengthen the compliance and reporting of these standards.

ILO supported the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and HRD in organizing a two-day National Tripartite Consultation on ‘Labour Legislation in Post-Devolution Scenario’ on 17-18 January 2017 in Islamabad. It was the first opportunity for all Federal and Provincial Tripartite Consultative Committee members to jointly review progress on Labour Legislation and discuss actions for each Province/State/Region. Consultation was part of the ILO’s new project ‘Promoting International Labour & Environmental Standards in Pakistani SMEs (ILES)’ – funded by EU.

Promoting safe migration from Pakistan: Pakistan’s second Migrant Resource Centre inaugurated in Lahore

The momentous occasion of the official opening of the Pakistan’s second Migrant Resource Centre (MRC), was held on the 20 September, 2016 in the presence of the representatives from government departments, civil society, INGOs, NGOs and media. Department of Labour and Human Resource Punjab has established this centre in collaboration with the ILO, EU and ICMPD.
The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to implement a “Coordinated Social Protection System: under One Window Operation” in the province

ILO is supporting the Government of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Province for establishing first ever ‘One-Window Operation’ for Social Protection on pilot basis. A two-day workshop was organized in Peshawar with more than 50 stakeholders to design the OWO and ensure its ownership by the relevant institutions.

A One UN project implemented by ILO, FAO and UN WOMEN in 120 villages of rural Sindh showcased its achievements through a closeout event in Islamabad on July 1, 2016. Project supported 11800 insecure, unprotected and the most vulnerable families who have endured devastating floods of 2010, rebuild their lives and attained their Human Security.
Promoting Safe Migration from Pakistan: Pakistan Overseas Employment Promoters Association launches a Code of Conduct on Ethical Recruitment

Pakistan Overseas Employment Promoters Association (POEPA) today took a historical step towards ensuring fair and ethical recruitment of migrant workers, when the industry launched its first ever Code of Conduct on Ethical Recruitment. The launch was made in the presence of 350 representatives from private recruitment agencies. The Code of Conduct on Ethical Recruitment was developed with support by the ILO South Asia Labour Migration Governance Project.

The third GSSF meeting focused on GSP+ in Pakistan and GIZ’s dialogue approach. The Ministry for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development led a lively discussion on the implementation gap in Pakistan and members of the forum gave interesting feedback on how implementation of the ILO’s core conventions could be improved in the future.

The first national consultative meeting on the ”National Strategy on the Elimination of Child and Bonded Labour in Pakistan” brought together over thirty high-level representatives of the Federal and Provincial governments, employers and workers to discuss and draw consensus on the goals, components and implementation structure of the framework. The national strategy was developed by the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, Government of Pakistan with technical assistance of the International Labour Organization [ILO].

Every year worldwide 28th April is remembered as World Day for Safety and Health at Work. This year it was commemorated under the theme “Workplace Stress: a collective challenge”. On this day, in Pakistan also, an event was organised where ILO along with its stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment towards the goal of safer workplaces. During this event, the annual EFP OSH&E Awards were also distributed amongst the winners.

ILO supported the launch of ‘report on State of Peasants Rights in Sindh’. The report published by Harri Welfare Association discusses the plight of peasants as driven by the socio-cultural, political, legal, administrative and financial factors. It also emphasizes the need for pro-peasant policies and actions in line with UN’s draft declaration on peasants’ rights and ILO conventions C-11 and C-29.
