Buyers Forum Established

The two days buyers meeting organised by the joint collaboration of the Government of Netherlands, International Finance Corporation and the International Labour Organisation to Promote Decent Work for the Sustainability of Textile and Garment Sector in Pakistan concluded with the establishment of a Buyers Forum for Pakistan. With an initial membership of 17 brands, this forum is expected to be extended to other major international brands. This initiative will support enhancing access to global markets and increased market share. Furthermore it aimed at promoting advocacy on the nexus between trade and employment and in particular compliance to ILS leading to the realisation of the full benefits of GSP Plus status

ISLAMABAD (ILO News): On 16th December, a total of 27 participants representing 17 brands began a dialogue on the establishment of a Buyers Forum for Pakistan.

The dialogue session was characterized by a series of presentations from the Ministry of Textiles, Ministry of Overseas Pakistani and Human Resource Development and the Ministry of Textiles who provided the policy, legal and regulatory environment of the textile sector as well as Governments challenges and progress on coordination, compliance and reporting on the 27 Conventions under GSP Plus. The Royal Netherlands Embassy provided insights on the workings of other Buyer Forum Models while the IFC provided information on the Global Trade Supplier Finance Programme that could facilitate the growth of buyers portfolio.

A closed door session followed the technical session that set the tone for the establishment of a Buyers Forum in Pakistan and affirmed the various brands commitment to raising the image of Pakistan as a viable source for garments and textiles. And for this improving compliance across the textile and garment supply chain is critically important.

A follow-up meeting will be held in January 2015.
