Hyderabad (ILO news): Officials of the Government of Sindh and United Nations (UN) and members of civil society participated in the inception workshop to mark the formal launching of the three year project entitled “the livelihood restoration and protection and sustainable empowerment of vulnerable Hari communities in Sindh province”. The project is funded by United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security with support from the Government of Japan and will be jointly implemented by the Government of Sindh, FAO, ILO and UNWOMEN in disaster-affected areas of Mirpurkhas and Dadu Districts.

The purpose of the workshop was to gain insights and experiences from ongoing programmes, discuss the project design and consolidate among other technical aspects, the beneficiary/right holders and geographic targeting and the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders. The consultative workshop will assist in the finalization of a detailed implementation plan which will be produced by the project’s technical working group (TWG).

In total, 54 participants from more than 30 organizations including representatives from the Government line departments, civil society, educational/research institutions and UN agencies participated in the workshop.
The project aims at restoring and protecting the livelihoods and empowering the poor and vulnerable Haris (men, women, boys and girls), dependent on prevailing landholding and farming systems in Sindh and affected by droughts, floods and human insecurity. The joint implementation by three specialized agencies will allow the delivery of services in an efficient and cost effective manner and will built on the technical expertise, experience and comparative advantage of specialized agencies.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kevin Gallagher, the FAO Representative in Pakistan thanked all participants for their valuable time and provided insights to joint programming and the UN system in Pakistan as well as globally. He said “I am here on behalf of the UN, representing the three partner agencies namely UNWOMEN, ILO and FAO. Pakistan is a middle income, food exporting country. But not everyone benefits equally from the opportunities and economic growth achieved over the years. Hari communities are one of the cases of human inequality. Today’s workshop is to seek your support and to learn from your experiences to advice us on the way forward. I welcome you all to the One-UN Programme”.

Hadayat Ullah Chhajhro, Direct General Sindh Agriculture Extension, Government of Sindh, Hyderabad said that “we need to train the Hari communities especially through the Farmer Field Schools (FFSs). To prevent the growers from using extensive amounts of pesticides on their cotton and vegetable crops, we trained them on the best management practices to get better yield. The yield is low in the area as the growers do not follow the instructions on crop husbandry techniques. However, they face financial problems to buy basic inputs. We recommend to train more women on kitchen gardening. He further added that about 80-90% chillies and 70-75% of bananas are produced in Sindh. The Agriculture Extension Network is working on both union council (UC) and Tappa levels from which this project can be benefitted. The Sindh Agriculture Department fully support FAO and other NGOs working for the agriculture-related activities in Sindh. We further extend our support for the successful implementation of this newly launched project”.

The event also included group exercises on the geographic and beneficiary selection criteria and contribution, roles and responsibilities of the partner organizations.
