    Taking forward Alliance 8.7 in sub-Saharan Africa

    “In order to advance Alliance 8.7, we can no longer do business as usual”, said ILO Regional Director for Africa, Aeneas Chuma, at the opening of a two-day regional consultation on child labour and forced labour in sub-Saharan Africa. The conference aims to agree on concrete continental actions in preparation for the IV Global Conference on the Sustained Eradication of Child Labour (November 2017, Argentina).

Natural disasters and climate change can negatively affect children’s rights in many aspects such as health, educational access, nutrition, livelihoods and economic exploitation through child labour.

    Children put their lives in danger as they are pushed to child labour and trafficking in conflicts and disasters. Almost 70 million children are affected by natural disasters each year and 250 million children live in areas affected by armed conflict.

    India ratifies both fundamental ILO Conventions on Child Labour

    Historic move confirms India’s “commitment to a child labour free society”. Ratification means that almost all children in the world are covered by Convention No. 182, while coverage of Convention No. 138 jumps from 60 per cent of the world’s children to 80 per cent.
