NEW DELHI – In a widely welcomed move, India's Cabinet has approved changes to the country's Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, which when approved by Parliament, will establish the minimum age of 14 years for employment and 18 years for hazardous work.

The changes will make the amended Act consistent with the Right to Education Act, 2009 as well as the ILO core Conventions on Child Labour, Convention No. 138 on the minimum age to employment and Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour. The Government has expressed its commitment to ratifying both the Conventions.
