This manual is the result of a collaborative effort between the International Labour Organization, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Children¿s Fund (UNICEF) as part of the UN Joint Programme on Trafficking (UNJPT) in Zambia.
This hand-out clarifies the concept of child trafficking including the labour dimension, and describes the nature of child trafficking and its appearances. It also offers short descriptions of effective responses in the world of work.
In the fight against child trafficking in West Africa, local community volunteers are engaged in monitoring the wellbeing of children and mobilizing the communities to take action against trafficking. Since 2005, they have repatriated 430 children and more than 3,500 children have been re-enrolled in public school or vocational centres after being taken away from their homes for exploitative work.
The perspectives and opinions of children and youth in the Mekong subregion have proven to be very valuable in the fight against trafficking.
An awareness raising campaign in railway stations in China has proven to be successful in warning migrants about the risk of being trafficked.
A Cambodian soap opera has proven to be very successful in raising awareness among the public about trafficking.
