Tackling child labour – A key to progress on the Millennium Development Goals

This event, organised by the Global Task Force on Child Labour and Education for All and the government of the Netherlands, considers how tackling child labour can contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Type: Meeting
When: 21 September 2010
Where: 13.00-14.45 - Floor 11, the Church Centre, 777 UN Plaza (opposite UN Building) - New York

In May 2010 the Hague Global Conference on Child Labour agreed a Roadmap for the elimination of the worst forms of child labour. It identified child labour as a significant impediment to attainment of MDGs concerning poverty, education, health and gender. The Roadmap also called for effective partnerships across the United Nations and the multilateral system to address child labour, and for mainstreaming attention to child labour into international policy and development frameworks and indicators.

This interactive discussion will consider how to mobilise support and action to take this agenda forward. The discussants have been closely involved in the Hague Child Labour Conference and its follow up, and efforts to progress action on the Millennium Development Goals. The panel will be moderated by Constance Thomas, Director of the ILO’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour, on behalf of the Global Task Force Secretariat. The discussants include:

  • Ad Melkert, Rapporteur of the Hague Child Labour Conference
  • Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the Secretary General on Violence against Children
  • Madam Marcia Lopes, Minister of Social Development, Brazil
  • Ms Yoka Brandt, Director-General, Directorate-General for International Cooperation, Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Olav Seim, Director of Education for All Coordination, UNESCO
  • Kailash Satyarthi, Global March against Child Labour
  • Education International representative

Lunch will be served
