Each year in the build up to the World Day Against Child Labour, IPEC collaborates with and supports a number of organizations, under the framework of the 12 to 12 Partnership Initiative, in key events and activities to raise awareness on child labour. SCREAM activities are often supported by local municipalities and mayors, many of which are members of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) “Millennium Cities and Towns Campaign” to demonstrate and promote the commitment of local governments and their citizens to achieving the Millennium Development Goals and Targets.
Events and activities focus on the areas of expertise and strength of each partner organization, and have included child labour workshops, theatre and film festivals, and international concerts. Activities have also included the creation of canvases, of giant “graffiti walls” and children’s artwork and literary contributions. Songs, poems, drama scripts and other related products have been displayed and are available to the public and to partners on the 12 to 12 Community Portal.

World Day Against Child Labour 2008 – Education: the right response to child labour
Celebrated on 12 June every year, the World Day Against Child Labour calls the world’s attention to the plight of millions of girls and boys who are victims of child labour. In 2008, the message of the World Day was that “Education is the right response to child labour”. Some examples of collaboration with partners on the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labour are featured below:
- Children’s solidarity event with “Le Respect, ça change la vie”, Geneva, Switzerland – a photo reportage
- “Once upon a time… Jiminy Cricket, Where are you?” – Exhibit in the United Nations in Geneva with Carnevalspettacolo and schools in Bergamo and Romagnano Sesia
- Joint circular with the World Organization of the Scout Movement
- Joint statement with the UN Inter-Agency Coordinating Committee on Human Rights Education in the School System

PeaceWaves Kids’ Guernica canvases on child labour
The PeaceWaves Kids’ Guernica project engages young people in educational activities leading to the creation of giant canvases (7.80m x 3.50m) on issues related to peace. Within the framework of the IPEC – PeaceWaves’ partnership, child labour has become a central issue and a series of canvases have been created on this theme:
Suzuki Child to Child Solidarity Concerts on child labour
Since 2000, the Suzuki Academy Talent Centre in Turin has been organising a series of “Child to Child” Solidarity Concerts with their young musicians to support the campaign against child labour.
