Selected past projects
- Globalization and Informality (2005): The project aimed at investigating the impact of globalization on informality and found that globalization promotes formality through a positive impact on economic growth;
- Institutional determinants of Informality (2006): The project identified a number of institutional variables that explain cross-country variation in the incidence of informality in the developing countries and did not find robust evidence in support of the fact that regulation (in the labour market) promotes informality;
- Upgrading value chain in handloom cluster in Kota district in Rajasthan in India (2004-2005): This was an intervention in the form of a pilot project to explore how a languishing and underperforming cluster could be upgraded; a ‘how to’ manual was developed on the basis of experience of working in the cluster;
- ICT for rural income generation and poverty alleviation(2003): The project studied the most popular ICT projects in India that have bearing on rural income generation and poverty alleviation to assess their employment potential;
- Telecommunication Sector Reforms and Technical Assistance (2001-2003): it was a project to install the latest technology for radio frequency monitoring and spectrum management;
- Monitoring Non-debt flows in India (2000): A project funded by the World Bank; the project led to the development of a manual for monitoring non-debt flows.
- Employment and Working Conditions in the beedi industry and prospects for the future (2000): The project studied the most recent trends in the employment and working conditions in the beedi industry in India and explored the potential for the employment diversification of the workers.
