As a UN specialized agency with a specific legal mandate on indigenous issues, in the form of Convention No. 169, the ILO is actively involved in a number of United Nations activities and processes of relevance to indigenous and tribal peoples.
The ILO actively participates with:
- Contributions to Inter-Agency Support Group on Indigenous Issues
- Technical advice and other support to the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
- Contributions to UN human rights treaty and charter bodies and rapporteurs
- Contributions to international discussions on thematic issues such as PRSPs, MDGs, free, prior and informed consent, data collection and indicators, governance, and others.
- Collaboration with UN agencies at the national level (for example in Congo, Nepal, Cambodia and Bolivia)
