    At the entrance of the Assembly Hall at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, domestic workers and trade unionists enthusiastically sang and clapped their hands after the adoption of the Domestic Worker Convention ad Recommendation at the 100th International Labour Conference on June 16. The ILO's Director-General, Juan Somavia, called it a historic moment for domestic workers worldwide.

    In the first ever visit of a German Chancellor to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), H.E. Ms. Angela Merkel today addressed the Organization’s annual conference. Speaking to the historic 100th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) Ms Merkel highlighted the increasing role played by the ILO in closer international cooperation. The G8 and G20 meetings would be “unthinkable without the wealth of experience of this Organisation”, she said, adding that the ILO’s involvement was the only way “to give globalization a form, a structure”.     The President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has called for a global coalition to tackle youth employment in an address to a special session of the 100th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva. The President called on delegates to work together to prevent increasing unemployment among young people, saying this would be critical to creating a new era of social justice.

  9. ILO and UN Women Sign Memorandum of Understanding

    ILO Director-General Juan Somavia and UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet, addressed conference delegates after signing a memorandum of understanding at the 100th International Labour Conference. The agreement will take the two agencies' strong working relationship to a "new and better level", said Juan Somavia, and will cover areas including gender equality, the elimination of gender discrimination in the workplace, domestic workers and social protection floors.
