XIIIth Meeting of European Labour Court Judges (Bologna, Italy)

The Initiating Committee members included: Paola Accardo, Judge of the Court of Appeal of Milan; Vincenzo Castiglione, President of the Labour Chamber, Court of Appeal, Bologna; and Aldo De Matteis, Judge of the Cassation Court, Rome (Labour Chamber), who kindly accepted to take charge of the organization of the event in Bologna; Judge Stephen Adler, President of the Labour Court of Israel; Judge Mario Eylert of the Federal Labour Court of Germany; and Michaël Koch, President of the Labour Court of Sweden.

Judges from labour courts from the following countries attended the Meeting: Australia (observer), Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malta, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Venezuela.

Two topics were selected for discussion:

  • Insolvency procedures and workers' rights (General Report and national reports: Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malta, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Venezuela.
  • The use of mediation in Labour Courts, including mediation at the appellate level (General Report and national reports: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland (A), Ireland (B), Israel, Malta, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Venezuela.

General Reports on each topic were prepared for the Meeting based on the national reports submitted by the participants. Judge Bartolomé Ríos Salmerón of the Supreme Court of Spain (Social Chamber) and Dr. Miguel A. Limón Luque, Professor of Law, Autonomous University of Madrid, and Mr. Arnold Zack, observer from the U.S., Faculty Member, Harvard Law School, were the reporters for topic 1 and topic 2, respectively.
