Media Training to Reporting on Disability in Viet Nam for Journalists

The workshop aims to share knowledge and reporting techniques on this issue to improve journalists' capacities and skills on reporting disability in Viet Nam and equip basic knowledge of employment for persons with disabilities and how important of inclusion persons with disabilities in the labour market.

Among labour and employment issues, disability is often under-reported by the press. Even when it is reported, the reality has shown that the media in Viet Nam have not yet had enough knowledge and experience in this area. This might result in adverse impacts and worsen the stigma against workers with disabilities.
Therefore, in collaboration with Viet Nam Journalist Training Center, a workshop to share knowledge and reporting techniques on this issue organized in Binh Duong province (April 2015) for 25 journalists from large media agencies to improve their capacities and skills on reporting disability in Viet Nam and equip basic knowledge of employment for persons with disabilities and how important of inclusion persons with disabilities in the labour market.
The media training also equipped for journalists basic techniques in reporting on employment for persons with disabilities includes finding strong story angles, identifying compelling story structures and strong characters, interview skills, developing compelling contents for online platforms and mobile devices, language to avoid stigma, and knowing where to find essential resources when reporting on disability at the workplace.
The training helps journalists in writing better stories when reporting employment issues related to people with disabilities and indirectly beneficial to the workers with disabilities and the whole community.
The training was conducted by Emmy Award winner ILO international consultant Mr. Eric May.
