To enhance the awareness and capacity of stakeholders implementing international labour commitments related to child labour in supply chains, a handbook is being developed with support from the ENHANCE Project.

HANOI (ILO News) – The ILO is supporting the Vietnamese Government to produce a comprehensive, user friendly handbook on implementing commitments on child labour standards in the context of new generation free trade agreements and other international commitments.

This is an activity under the framework of ENHANCE (Technical Support for Enhancing the National Capacity to Prevent and Reduce Child Labour in Viet Nam) project.

In addition to clearly outlining standards, commitments and requirements on child labour prevention and elimination in the context of international integration, the handbook will document experiences of implementing these commitments and highlight good practices related to child labour prevention in supply chains.

As Viet Nam’s integration into the global economy deepens, such a guide is crucial to raise national awareness and provide a good reference source for Government officials, workers and employers about the nature of child labour in supply chains and how to prevent it. Failing to effectively eliminate child labour in supply chains would lead to trade sanctions that would impede the socio-economic development of the country.

The handbook is expected to be ready for publication in early May this year. The ENHANCE Project is also collaborating with the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) to produce a manual on child labour prevention and elimination for the use of trade union officials.

The manual will help them in their routine work to promote child rights and child labour prevention and reduction amongst enterprises. It is also expected to be available in May 2020.
