HANOI (ILO News) – The ILO Viet Nam announced young winners of the 2017 SafeYouth@Work Media Competition at an award ceremony organized yesterday in Hanoi. The top prizes went to Nguyen Thi Phuong (Public Vote Winner) and Vu Duc Nhat (Creativity Winner) who are both students of the Academy for Journalism and Communications, and Tran Thuy Duong (Grand Prize Winner), fourth-year student at the Foreign Trade University.

The competition aimed at helping put youth vision and voice at the centre of discussion on preventing workplace accidents and diseases.

It was carried out in conjunction with the International Media Festival for Prevention and the XXI World Congress on Safety and Health at Work which will take place in September in Singapore.

The competition received submissions of various types of art works, from short films, stories, documentaries, paintings, posters to songs, showing the creativeness of the young participants in dealing with occupational safety and health issues.

It is expected that these submissions help focus public attention on the importance of creating a preventive culture at workplaces, while contributing to mitigating workplace dangerous occurrences and potential harms.

“I own the inspiration for my submission to everyday observance,” said Nguyen Thi Phuong at the award ceremony. Phuong’s short documentary plots psychological impacts of a young worker after he experienced an accident caused by negligence at work.

According to a study by the European Union, young workers aged between 15 and 24 are 40 per cent more likely to higher rate of injury than older workers due to a lack of awareness of safety rules and rights, training and experience. “Decent work must be safe work,” said ILO Viet Nam Director Chang-Hee Lee who emphasized the role of the young people themselves in the fight to make all workplaces safe.
