This policy brief focuses on the opportunities made available in informal apprenticeship systems for improving skill provision in the informal economy to offer young people, especially in developing countries, ways to more productive and decent jobs. The brief draws from ILO Skills and Employability Department's work with constituents to upgrade and expand informal apprenticeship systems through technical cooperation projects operating in Asia and Africa.

The report presents the latest global and regional labour market trends for youth and examines whether or not the situation that young people face in the labour market has improved or worsened over the year and a half since the release of the special edition of the Global Employment Trends for Youth, August 2010 on the impact of the economic crisis. One year later, with an environment of growing uncertainty in the economic recovery and stalled recovery in the job market, the report draws the unfortunate conclusion that the situation facing youth in the labour market has not improved and that prospects for the future are not much better.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has warned of a "scarred" generation of young workers facing a dangerous mix of high unemployment, increased inactivity and precarious work in developed countries, as well as persistently high working poverty in the developing world.

The International Day of Cooperatives addresses the need for all cooperative stakeholders to promote the participation of young people in the cooperative movement.This year's theme highlights how the cooperative model of enterprise can successfully empower youth. It links to the celebration of the United Nations International Year of Youth, which encourages dialogue and understanding across generations and promotes the ideals of peace, respect for human rights and freedoms, and solidarity .

Yang Shumbo, a Chinese electronic sciences student invented a device to save electricity. He developed this into a business under a pilot project of the Greener Business Option (GBO), an ILO Green Jobs Programme initiative. GBO aims to encourage entrepreneurship in green businesses among young people.
