    Last year there were an estimated 244 million international migrants representing 3.3 per cent of the global population – over 150 million of these were migrant workers. In addition, there are over 65 million people forcibly displaced by conflict, violence and human rights violations of which 21.3 million are recognized as refugees and registered asylum seekers. Cooperatives are well-placed to provide a part of the response to both refugee and labour migration situations. In fact, cooperative interventions have been used to deliver on refugee situations across the world in recent years.

    The annual United Nations Climate Change Conference will be held in Bab Ighli, Marrakech, Morocco from 7-18 November 2016. This twenty-second session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) follows the adoption in 2015 of the Paris Agreement on climate change at COP21.

    Refugee crisis and access to labour markets must be a shared responsibility, says ILO

    It is not possible to expect those developing countries - which by the accident of geographical proximity are bearing at the moment most of the responsibility - to deal with the refugee crisis on their own, said ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder to the BBC. The UN General Assembly hosted a high-level summit on September 19 to address large movements of refugees and migrants, with the aim of bringing countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach.

    Workshop to prepare for a Sector Study in Nepal (ECLM project)

    A Workshop was held in Kathmandu from August 29 - September 2 in in the context of the project "Assessing the economic contribution of labour migration in developing countries as countries of destination" (ECLM). The workshop was organised in collaboration with Social Science Baha, a research institution in Nepal, and discussed the implementation of a study of the manufacturing and small trade sectors.
