    Workshop to prepare for a Sector Study in Nepal (ECLM project)

    A Workshop was held in Kathmandu from Aug 29 – Sep 2 2016 in the context of the project "Assessing the economic contribution of labour migration in developing countries as countries of destination" (ECLM). The workshop was organised in collaboration with a team of researchers from Social Science Baha, and discussed the implementation of a study of the manufacturing and trade sectors.     National Consultation Seminar on assessing the economic contribution of labour migration in Thailand (ECLM project)

    A National Consultation Seminar was held in Bangkok on September 15, 2015, and brought together more than 45 policymakers, government officials and experts to discuss on various aspects of the role of migrant workers in Thailand, in the context of the "Assessing the economic contribution of labour migration in developing countries as countries of destination" (ECLM) project.     This global project seeks to contribute to the promotion of fair recruitment practices globally and across specific migration corridors in North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. Target countries for pilot projects include Jordan, Nepal, Tunisia and the Philippines.

    The Republic of Korea’s Employment Permit System (EPS): Background and Rapid Assessment

    For the majority of the 20th century, the Republic of Korea was a country of net emigration, but it has entered the 21st century as a clear country of destination, in particular for workers from other Asian countries, who come to work mainly in small-and-medium sized enterprises and in agriculture. The Employment Permit System (EPS) is an example of a non-seasonal temporary labour migration programme that operates through bilateral government-to-government memoranda of understanding (MOU). This paper provides some background to the creation of the EPS, gives an overview of its functioning, and assesses its strengths and weaknesses in terms of migration governance and the protection of migrant workers. The paper is based mainly on existing desk-research as well as interviews with stakeholder representatives.

    Consultation/Validation Workshop on the Implementation of Mutual Recognition of Skills in ASEAN countries

    Consultation/Validation Workshop on the Implementation of Mutual Recognition of Skills in ASEAN countries was held on 24-26 September 2014 in Jakarta, Indonesia. This workshop is a follow up workshop from previous activities undertaken by the ILO to support the establishment of a regional skills and qualification frameworks. The workshop will present priority occupations identified by the AMS to employers’ and workers’ organizations for their validation. The workshop also plans to develop a tripartite action plan that will lead to the formation of a mutual skills recognition mechanism between AMS to achieve the free flow of skilled labor, one of the goals of the ASEAN Economic Community.

    The project’s central objective is to protect the rights of migrant workers through organizing, empowerment activities, enhanced cooperation and trade union support in countries of origin (Myanmar, Indonesia, and Nepal) and destination (Malaysia and Thailand).

    The Joint ILO-UN Women Regional Workshop on Effective Social and Economic Reintegration of Women Migrant Workers

    The Joint ILO-UN Women Regional Workshop on Effective Social and Economic Reintegration of Women Migrant Workers was held on the 19 – 21st August 2014 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The regional workshop was held with the aim to identify, document and share good practices in the reintegration services and programs for returning women migrant workers, which effectively foster both their social and economic integration.

    Promoting cooperation for safe migration and decent work

    This publication is based on the "International Regional Seminar on Promoting Cooperation for Safe Migration and Decent Work", which took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 1 and 2 July 2013 and presents papers on themes such as protection and support services for women and men migrant workers, well-being of the women migrant workers from Bangladesh and regulation of international recruitment. This report also contains collective views of the participants in a report of the proceedings and the Dhaka statement, which was jointly issued by the participants.
