ASEAN Meeting of Skills Focal Points In Collaboration with the Department of Skill Development Ministry of Labour of Thailand

The ILO Regional Skills Programme through its Korea-funded Project on “Towards a Mutual Recognition of Skills in CLM (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar) Countries for AEC 2015 and Beyond” and the ILO ASEAN TRIANGLE project (ATP), in collaboration with Department of Skill Development, Ministry of Labour of Thailand, organise the ASEAN Meeting of Skills Focal Points on 10-11 August 2015 in Bangkok, Thailand. Skills Focal Points and members of Task Force on the ASEAN Qualifications Reference Framework (AQRF) of the 10 ASEAN Member States are invited to the event to discuss on the implementation of Mutual Recognition of Skills and plan strategically on way forward.

Foreign Employment Research and Promotion Training

This technical training for representatives of Kiribati, Tuvalu and Nauru governments is aimed at increasing capacity of officials in Departments of Labour, embassy officers and other government staff, to provide a foundation for governments to develop the framework to carry out foreign employment market research and promotion. The training will cover information on foreign labour markets in low-skilled and semi-skilled occupations where there may be opportunities for decent work, and provide guidance on using information to promote and strengthen participation of workers in labour migration program.

ASEAN Regional Conference of Senior Official on Strengthening the Protection and Empowerment of Women Migrant Workers

ASEAN Regional Conference of Senior Official on Strengthening the Protection and Empowerment of Women Migrant Workers is held on 13-14 November 2014 in Quezon City, Philippines. The ILO ATP in collaboration with the ASEAN Committee on Women (ACW) and ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) convened a Conference among senior officials, with special focus on vulnerable groups of female migrant workers: those in domestic work, those who are victims of forced labour and trafficking, and those who are in the midst of crisis situations in destination countries. The Conference strengthened regional coordination and information sharing for the protection and empowerment of women migrant workers, and increased knowledge on and promoted gender-responsive labour migration policies and programs in both labour sending and receiving states in ASEAN. The Conference concluded with recommendations to enhance migration policies and programs affecting women migrant workers in ASEAN.

Employers’ Regional Workshop: Hiring Migrant Workers – The Regulatory Environment was held on 6-7 November 2014 in Bangkok, Thailand. This workshop is organized by the ATP in collaboration with the ILO’s Bureau for Employers Activities (ACTEMP) and the ASEAN Confederation of Employers. The workshop aims to support employers’ organizations to respond sufficiently to issues related to recruiting migrant workers in ASEAN. The workshop plans to increase businesses’ understanding of the implications of having regional recruitment infrastructure conductive to the free flow of skilled labour.

Consultation/Validation Workshop on the Implementation of Mutual Recognition of Skills in ASEAN countries

Consultation/Validation Workshop on the Implementation of Mutual Recognition of Skills in ASEAN countries was held on 24-26 September 2014 in Jakarta, Indonesia. This workshop is a follow up workshop from previous activities undertaken by the ILO to support the establishment of a regional skills and qualification frameworks. The workshop will present priority occupations identified by the AMS to employers’ and workers’ organizations for their validation. The workshop also plans to develop a tripartite action plan that will lead to the formation of a mutual skills recognition mechanism between AMS to achieve the free flow of skilled labor, one of the goals of the ASEAN Economic Community.
