Marking International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples 2016

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Combating Climate Change: Indigenous Peoples as Change Agents through Decent Work

ILO experts to discuss how to support indigenous peoples in their critical role as agents of change in both achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and combating climate change.

This International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is the first to follow the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. It provides an opportunity to promote joint reflection on how the ILO can contribute to the implementation of these global agendas through addressing indigenous peoples’ issues under the Decent Work Agenda.

The following issues will be introduced through short presentations by experts from the ILO’s Gender, Equality and Diversity Branch and Green Jobs Programme, followed by an interactive debate regarding:
  • How indigenous women and men are under risk of being “left behind” without adequate attention being devoted to their situations, while at the same time are facing additional threats from the changing climate as well as climate policies that exclude them.
  • Good practices and success stories on how indigenous peoples have a critical role to play as agents of change in both achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and combating climate change.
  • Specific opportunities and challenges for the ILO to support the empowerment of indigenous peoples through its relevant strategies, programmes and means of action.
Experts will also present the following new publications: The event is jointly organized by the Gender, Equality and Diversity Branch, the Green Jobs Programme and the Cooperatives Branch and is linked to the Green Initiative. It is open to ILO staff, staff from other UN agencies and interested permanent missions to UN.
