    Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) is a subsidiary of Coal India Limited India, a state-owned coal mining company which is the largest producer of coal in the world. ECL currently has a total workforce of over 64,000 plus a large number of contractual workers. ECL operates in the coal belt of Durgapur-Asansol in West Bengal. It is one of the leading public sector companies in India engaged in protecting miners from TB and HIV in collaboration with the national TB and HIV programmes and the ILO.

    The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), a public sector company in Mumbai, India is the lifeline of the city’s public transportation service, reaching out to three million commuters daily. BEST also supplies electricity to over a million consumers. TB and HIV response of BEST is part of the company’s focus on health and well- being of employees, their families and communities. Having over ten years of technical partnership with the ILO, the company is experiencing several benefits of such an integrated response.

    Launched ahead of World AIDS Day 2018, the policy brief, developed by ILO and WHO, outlines key planning and implementation considerations for managers and implementers on HIV self-testing at workplaces. Given the gaps in HIV testing, HIV self-testing is one of the options recommended by WHO that can be used to reach undiagnosed populations. HIV self-testing at workplaces gives workers more choices, greater confidentiality and convenience.

    HIV Stigma and Discrimination in the World of Work: Findings from the People Living with HIV Stigma Index

    Although access to effective HIV antiretroviral treatments has improved significantly – enabling people living with HIV to live long and productive lives including working and contributing to society in many different ways – people living with HIV continue to face discrimination in relation to work in terms of finding employment, keeping jobs and furthering career progression.

    This brief provides a snapshot of the prevalence of discrimination against people living with HIV in workplace settings: a practice that is evident across countries and regions.
