Niger has ratified the Protocol of 2014 to the Forced Labour Convention, 1930. The Protocol brings the existing convention into the modern era, with new provisions on prevention, protection and victims’ access to remedies.

ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder, was joined by delegates to the International Labour Conference, in signing a signature panel symbolizing support for the 50 for Freedom campaign to end modern slavery. The campaign has the goal of encouraging 50 member States to ratify, by 2018, the Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention.

An estimated 21 million people are in forced labour and generate around USD 150 billion of illicit profits every year, according to Beate Andrees, head of the ILO's Special Action Programme to Combat Forced Labour. In her interview on Al Jazeera's "Counting the Cost", Andrees said more needs to be done to address the root causes of forced labour and human trafficking through greater political commitment and social movements.

Very few of the estimated 53 million domestic workers worldwide are covered by labour laws. In 2011, the ILO's Member States adopted the Domestic Workers' Convention (N°189) to protect their rights, promote equality of opportunity and treatment, and improve working and living conditions. So far, 17 countries have ratified this convention. Let's keep the momentum!

The new legally-binding ILO Protocol on Forced Labour aims to strengthen global efforts towards combating forced labour, trafficking and slavery-like practices. Governments now have the opportunity to ratify the Protocol and integrate new measures at the national and regional levels to combat this crime.

It is estimated that indigenous peoples constitute some 370 million individuals, representing more than 5,000 distinct peoples living in more than 70 countries. Throughout history, lack of respect for these cultures has led to conflict in far too many cases around the world. The ILO has been working to improve the conditions of indigenous and tribal peoples since the 1920s. Despite progress, the path to an inclusive and fair society is far from over.

The annual International Labour Conference has ended Thursday. In his closing remarks Director General Guy Ryder pointed to the successful adoption of the forced labour protocol as a notable achievement.
