ILO’s presentation at the 2nd ICA-AP Cooperative Registrars’ Forum

The Director of the ILO Country Office for Viet Nam participated in the 2nd International Co-operative Alliance – Asia and Pacific (ICA-AP) Cooperative Registrars’ Forum held in Ho Chi Minh city, Viet Nam to present ILO’s work on statistics of cooperatives.

The 2nd ICA-AP Cooperative Registrars’ Forum was held in Ho Chi Minh city from 16 to 19 April 2019 in collaboration with the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance (VCA) and the Vietnam Organic Agricultural Economics Institute.

Under the theme of “Creating enabling legal framework and policies to promote sustainable development of cooperatives in the 21th Century”, various participants from ICA-AP member organizations, governments, international cooperation agencies, and other civil society organizations shared their views on current socio-economic trends surrounding cooperatives in the region, exchanged best practices and knowledge on the creation of an enabling environment for cooperatives, and discussed on the possible areas of collaboration in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through cooperatives. In the Forum, the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, Mr. Vuong Dinh Hue, delivered a keynote speech emphasizing the role of cooperatives in achieving the SDGs.

From the ILO, the Director of the ILO Country Office in Viet Nam, Mr. Chang-Hee Lee, participated in the Forum as one of key speakers and made a presentation on the ILO’s work on cooperatives. In his speech, he highlighted the historical relationship between the ILO and the cooperative movement which dates back to the establishment of the Organization in 1919. He also presented the ILO’s work on statistics of cooperatives with a particular focus on the guidelines concerning statistics of cooperatives which were adopted at the 20th International Conference of Labour Statisticians (ICLS) in October 2018.
