Due Diligence training to eliminate child labour in Uganda

Through the training, participants were able to reflect on the specific challenges that they face and learned how to use different practical tools to implement in practice the different steps in a child labour due diligence process by which companies identify, prevent, manage and account for the negative impact occurring in their operations or value chains.

When Suman Kumari was 13 her father became ill and the family fell into debt. When COVID-19 hit and with creditors at the door, she joined her mother at her workplace processing mica, a mineral dust used in cosmetics, paints and electronics. An ILO project has helped her return to school.

The importance of just transitions and labour mobility as mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change

The ILO, as one of the co-conveners of the Issue Based Coalition on Migration in the Arab region (IBC/M), participated in the online Regional Dialogue on Climate Change and Migration Nexus in the Arab Region on 24 and 25 October and organized a session on ‘Migration and labour mobility as an adaptation strategy to climate change and the importance of just transitions’, bringing together ILO’s tripartite constituents who explored the numerous linkages between climate change, migration and the labour market.

Child labour is present in the garment, textile and cotton supply chain in multiple countries around the world. It is found particularly in Africa and Asia where cotton production systems are labour intensive and/or are dominated by small-holder farms.
