Indonesia ratifies the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended (MLC, 2006)

Indonesia, an important actor of international maritime trade, is the 83rd Member State of the ILO that ratifies this convention.

On 12 June 2017, Indonesia deposited the instrument of ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended (MLC, 2006) with the International Labour Office. Indonesia, an important actor of international maritime trade, is the 83rd Member State of the ILO that ratifies this Convention. The country’s merchant fleet amounts to a gross tonnage of 15 million. In addition, due to its strategic geographical location, Indonesia’s major port Jakarta ranks amongst the top 20 ports of the world. Moreover, the country is an important labour supplying actor with 150,000 Indonesian seafarers.

In depositing the instrument of ratification of the MLC, 2006, his Excellency Mr Hanif DHAKIRI, Minister of Manpower of Indonesia, stated: “With this ratification, Indonesia confirmed its commitment to achieve decent work for seafarers and to ensure fair competition for quality shipowners. As one of the largest seafarer supply countries, we underscore the importance of the Convention to strengthen the protection of all seafarers and to further contribute to the promotion of international minimum standard of treatment of all seafarers. Indonesia stands ready to work together with the ILO Office and ILO constituents to implement the Convention with a view to enhance better work environment for the seafarers”.

When receiving the instrument of ratification, the Director-General of the ILO, Mr Guy Ryder, stated: “I am extremely pleased to see that Indonesia, a key player in the international maritime trade, is joining the global effort to promote decent living and working conditions for seafarers while ensuring a level playing field in the maritime industry. This ratification marks an important milestone for the protection of numerous seafarers working on board of vessels flying the flag of Indonesia as well as for Indonesian seafarers.”
