The Government of Canada deposited its instrument of ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 with the International Labour Office on 15 June. Canada is the first North American country to ratify this key maritime labour Convention, sometimes called the “super convention”, adopted by the 94th International Labour Conference (Maritime) in Geneva in February 2006.

The determined efforts made over recent years by the ILO and its constituents to develop a more holistic and integrated approach to the fundamental issue of occupational safety and health (OSH) culminated in the adoption by the ILO Governing Body at its 307th Session (March 2010) of a Plan of Action for achieving the widespread ratification and effective implementation of the three OSH instruments (Convention No. 155, its 2002 Protocol and Convention No. 187). This Plan of Action builds on the 2003 Global Strategy on OSH, the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187), and the 2009 General Survey on Occupational Safety and Health.

ILO Convention No. 169 is based on the recognition of indigenous and tribal peoples’ aspirations to exercise control over their own institutions, ways of life and economic development and to maintain and develop their identities, languages and religions, within the framework of the States in which they live. The Central African Republic will become the first African Member State of the ILO to ratify this Convention.

By ratifying this significant Convention, Bulgaria became the second European Union country, after Spain, to ratify this instrument, also referred to as the fourth pillar of the international regulatory regime for quality shipping.
