  1. The FDI - employment link in a globalizing world: the case of Argentina, Brazil and Mexico

    This study first analyzes the evolution of FDI and the increasing role of transnational companies (TNCs) in the domestic economies of Argentina, Brazil and Mexico and then in a second part outlines the motivations and the different forms of FDI. A third part describes the impact of FDI on employment and wages of different sectors, while part four shows the shift from the State as an economic player towards the private sector as the key player of the economy.

  5. Enhancing social protection to alleviate HIV/AIDS induced child labour: Experiences from Uganda. Paper No. 11

    The objectives of this paper are to define social protection and its purpose in the context of HIV/AIDS and Child Labour. Using experiences from Uganda, this paper presents a strategy for integrating and mainstreaming social protection into action programmes supported by ILO-IPEC, as well as working with all major stakeholders to prevent HIV/AIDS induced child labour. The strategy incorporates all responsible social protection providers across all sectors and demands a central coordinating presence at central government level.

    This study, outcome of joint ILO/DfID collaboration, offers a first estimate on the feasibility of basic social protection in low-income countries in Asia with a view to achieving the Millennium Development Goals and as a contribution to the construction of a Global socio-economic floor.

  2. Cash benefits in low-income countries: Simulating the effects of poverty reduction for Senegal and Tanzania

    Issues in Social Protection Discussion paper 15. The study, outcome of joint ILO/DfID collaboration, provided a simulation on the introduction of basic social cash transfer programmes on household welfare, poverty incidence and depth in two African countries: Senegal and Tanzania. The objective was to provide evidence that a minimum socio-economic floor has a positive impact on poverty reduction.
