Presenting new analytical and policy-oriented research, this timely study examines the positive, as well as the negative, social impact of globalization in countries at various stags of economic development. It looks at how globalization stimulates output and income for some nations, but can also create wider income inequalities, job instability and economic vulnerability. It investigates what kinds of policies (economic, social and labour) can be adopted to improve the benefits and reduce the costs as the world becomes more economically integrated.

Accompanying this synthesis study are seven detailed country reports which can be purchased separately or as a complete set - they outline some of the recent trends in globalization and social progress, assess the social effects, and examine a variety of policy issues, including international integration, changing labour market conditions, protection against labour and social insecurities and labour-management relations.
