Can information and communication technologies, ICT, be a potent force in employment generation and poverty alleviation? The answer to this is unanimously positive. However, the precise manner in which ICT affects the poor is something that does not have adequate empirical evidence. In recent years, there have been several initiatives on the part of the Government of India and state governments to use ICT for development. Non-government entities, whether voluntary organizations or private corporate sector, have also undertaken various projects in this field. This book details some of these examples and examines whether they have, in fact, contributed to employment generation and poverty alleviation in a significant manner.
