Making Globalization Socially Sustainable

Globalization is widely seen as a powerful engine that has the potential to promote growth and development. For many years, however, concerns have also been raised about the effects of globalization on jobs and wages. This has led to questions about the social sustainability of globalization. Accelerating action against child labour; Global Report under the follow-up to the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work - 2010

In its quadrennial Global Report on child labour, the ILO says that the global number of child labourers had declined from 222 million to 215 million, or 3 per cent, over the period 2004 to 2008, representing a “slowing down of the global pace of reduction.” The report also expresses concern that the global economic crisis could “further brake” progress toward the goal of eliminating the worst forms of child labour by 2016.

Give girls a chance. Tackling child labour, a key to the future

This report provides an overview on the involvement of girls in child labour and the policy responses required to tackle the problem. It provides global estimates on girls involvement in child labour and looks at major sectors of work in which girls are involved. It also considers the issue of gender inequalities in education and how these contribute to child labour and the transition of girls into the youth labour market. The report concludes with proposals on the policy response required to tackle child labour of girls.
