Empowering Africa’s peoples with decent work - Report of ILO Director-General for the 12th African Regional Meeting

Daunting challenges for the continent remain with us. Across the region, the rebound of economic growth has still not reduced poverty, unemployment and underemployment. What does Africa’s economic growth mean for young people if such growth is not translated into concrete opportunities for them in the labour market? Events in North Africa and the Middle East are an important reminder of why employment, and more importantly youth employment, should be at the centre of the global development agenda. The report proposes the following framework for fast-tracking the mainstreaming of the Decent Work Agenda and the accelerated implementation of the Decent Work Agenda in Africa, 2007–15: building synergies between the 17 targets; strengthening capacity; managing knowledge; bridging the resource gaps; and partnering for decent work.
