On Thursday, 5 November 2009 a special joint event organized by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) will be held to award the prize-winner of the UPU’s International Letter Writing Competition for Young People 2009.
The UPU's international letter-writing competition for young people promotes letter writing among young people. The first competition was launched in 1971 and since then, millions of youngsters all over the world have participated in the competition at national and international level.
This year, the theme chosen for the 38th edition of the competition was ‘Decent Work’. The competition was won by 14 year old Dominika Koflerova of the Czech Republic. Her letter, using an example of fair trade chocolate production in Zambia, was selected from over 2 million entries written by children from some 60 countries.
The award ceremony will take place at the ILO Headquarters in Geneva, in the presence of ILO Director-General Mr. Juan Somavia, UPU Director-General Mr. Edouard Dayan, the competition winner, and invited guests.
The event will feature an introduction to the annual competition and the ILO Decent Work campaign by Mr. Dayan and Mr. Somavia, a presentation by Miss Koflerova of her final letter, and the official prize-giving.
