Austerity is gripping Europe—unemployment is at record levels and the battle between government and the worker has never been fiercer. Not the best time to be taking over leadership of the International Labour Organization—the UN’s agency to oversee global labour standards. But it’s the task Guy Ryder has taken on after being elected as the ILO’s new director general at the 101st session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva this week.
