The report, "Strengthening Migration Governance" examines ways of strengthening migration governance through international cooperation to prevent the negative impacts of the economic and social crisis on migrant workers.

With the launch of the ILO's Global Wage Report 2010/2011, ILO TV interviews Manuela Tomei, Director of the ILO Conditions of Work and Employment Programme (TRAVAIL). Based on an analysis of wages in 115 countries, the report says the financial and economic crisis cut global wage growth by half in 2008 and 2009. The increasing discrepancy between low-wage and high-wage earners has had a deleterious effect on consumption worldwide. The interview highlights how several national recovery schemes and measures have worked to buffer wage stagnation and avoid lay offs, thus hastening a sustainable economic recovery.

ILO Director-General Juan Somavia addressed the inaugural meeting of the Global Youth Employment Agenda in London hosted by CNBC and the Blackstone Charitable Foundation. In a video-message he expressed concern over the crisis in youth employment worldwide and encouraged business to focus on investing in young people, as a way to invest in the future.

With the launch of the ILO's World Social Security Report 2010, ILO TV interviews Michael Cichon, Director of the ILO Social Security Department. The report examines the current state of social security across the world and the positive impact that a social protection floor can have as a social and economic stabilizer, particularly in times of crisis. Michael Cichon argues that all countries can put some basic social protection measures in place. "We have a saying in the social security department: there is nobody too poor to share," he says.

The ILO estimates that unemployment is up by more than 30 million worldwide since 2007. The number of unemployed youth increased by 8.5 million between 2008 and 2009, the largest year-on-year increase in at least ten years. Against this sombre economic background, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) systems worldwide are under pressure to deal with a host of employment and workplace challenges. ILO TV spoke with Mr Charles Fadel, employer representative, Cisco Systems, United States, about how TVET systems can respond to these challenges.
