ILO TV interviews Ekkehard Ernst, Chief of the ILO Employment Trends Unit, about global employment trends for 2012. He outlines three scenarios, projecting what the global employment situation could be like if economic growth estimates hold true, if they decline, and if there is an improvement.

ILO TV interviews Dorothea Schmidt, a Senior ILO Employment Specialist based in Cairo, about rising unemployment across North Africa and the impact it is having in particular on young people and women. Based on findings from the ILO's Global Employment Trends 2012 report, she also discusses the lack of productive growth in North Africa and the need for further development of labour market institutions such as public employment services. Despite short-term negative effects on North African economies, Ms. Schmidt describes the ILO's hope that the Arab Spring of 2011 will have a positive impact on labour markets in the long-term.

The biannual General Assembly of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) is being held from 15-18 November, 2011 in Cancun, Mexico. On this occasion the global cooperative community also marked the launch of the UN International Year of Cooperatives. Through a video message, ILO Director-General Juan Somavia addressed the opening session of the gathering.

Raymond Torres, Director of the ILO International Institute for Labour Studies, discusses the likelihood of a deeper global jobs recession in a grim analysis outlined in the World of Work report, issued by the ILO on the eve of the G20 leaders summit. The report projects that the global economy is on the verge of a new jobs recession that will further delay the global economic recovery and may ignite more social unrest in scores of countries.

The views and aspirations of some of the more than 4,000 participants of the 100th International Labour Conference are shared in a video finale presented at the closing ceremony in the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland. It is a parting impression of 17 days of committee discussions, special events, high-level panels, special guests and the adoption of a landmark convention for domestic workers.

These highlights include delegates' views on the issue of social justice, the International Labour Conference (ILC) as an invaluable and unique forum for tripartite dialogue between workers, employers and government representatives as well as youth unemployment in the 21st Century.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the former General Secretary of the National League for Democracy in Myanmar, spoke via video message to the delegates of the 100th International Labour Conference of the ILO. She expressed her hope that the ILO would expand its activities in Myanmar and help usher in an era of social justice. The International Labour Organization's current activities in Myanmar include efforts to ensure the elimination of forced labour.

ILO TV interviews Constance Thomas, Director of the ILO's International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour. In a new report issued for World Day Against Child Labour, the International Labour Organization warns that a staggeringly high number of children are still caught in hazardous work - some 115 million of the world's 215 million child labourers - and calls for urgent action to halt the practice.
