  1. Bringing Better Work to Haiti's Garment Industry

    Better Work, the unique partnership programme of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), organized the first-ever international buyers forum in Haiti recently as part of a new project that is expected to create jobs and promote sustainable development and responsible labour practices in the countrys garment industry. Speaking at the forum was Ros Harvey, ILO's Global Programme Manager for Better Work. At a separate event for international business leaders sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), former US President Bill Clinton, UN special envoy to Haiti discussed what the Better Work programme could bring to the Haitian garment industry.

  1. Director-General Juan Somavia presents the Global Jobs Pact to the High-level Segment of ECOSOC 2009

    At an ECOSOC High-level Policy Dialogue on current developments in the world economy, ILO Director-General Juan Somavia spoke about the ILO's Global Jobs Pact which aims at shortening the lag time between growth recovery and employment recovery. The Pact proposes a range of crisis-response measures that countries can adapt to their specific needs and situation.

    Presidents and delegates gathered in Geneva during the International Labour Conference to discuss the global jobs crisis at the largest global gathering of leaders from the world of work. Heads of State and Government called on the ILO to examine and participate in discussions to find a solution to the jobs crisis.
