  1. G20 Seoul Summit Briefing by His Excellency Ambassador Ho-young AHN

    08 September 2010

    A presentation on the G20 Summit to be held in Seoul on November 11-12 was made by Mr Ho-young AHN, Deputy Minister for Trade, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Korea and nominated Ambassador at Large for the G20. Mr. Ahn highlighted some of the key issues to be discussed such as financial safety nets and the Millenium Development Goals.

  1. Success Stories on Social Protection

    Ensuring a basic level of social protection and a decent life for all is the main goal of the UN Social Protection Floor Initiative. Many developing countries have already successfully taken measures supported by the Initiative and the ILO as one of its lead agencies. Other countries recently committed to start building their own Social Protection Floors. At the 99th International Labour Conference representatives from Brazil, Argentina, India, South Africa shared their experiences, highlighting the key factors of success as well as the positive impact on national social and economic development.

  2. Namibia and ILO to Implement the New Decent Work Country Programme 2010-2014

    In light of the crisis, the Republic of Namibia and the International Labour Organization signed a new Memorandum of Understanding to implement the Decent Work Country Programme 2010-2014 with the aim of promoting employment, mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS at the workplace and strenghtening social dialogue.

  3. Brazil Expands Technical Cooperation Efforts with the ILO (Interview in Portuguese)

    The government of Brazil has signed a series of agreements with the ILO, Timor Leste, Haiti and the United States as part of its on-going efforts to promote technical cooperation between nations. The agreements include a Joint Declaration on Combating Child Labour, a project on Social Protection, a programme on Forced Labour and Green Jobs, and a programme to strengthen workers’ organizations capacity in Africa. The Brazilian government was represented, among others, by Mr Marco Farani, Director of the Brazilian Agency for Cooperation, ABC, and Mr Carlos Lupi, Minister of Labour and Employment.

  4. Panel Discussion: The Role of Productive Employment and Social Protection in Realizing the Millennium Development Goals

    Moderated by Mr. Americo Martins dos Santos from BBC World Service, panellists discussed various issues including the role of social protection as a development and poverty reduction tool. Panellists included: Mr Robert Nkili, Minister of Labour and Social Security, Cameroun; Chairperson, African Union Labour and Social Affairs Commission; Government Vice-President of the ILC; Dr Kamal Elkheshen, Vice President, Sector Operations, African Development Bank; Mr Yogendra K. Modi, Chairman and CEO, Great Eastern Energy Corporation Ltd.; Mr Quintino M. Severo, General Secretary, Central Sindical dos Trabalhadores (CUT), Brazil; and Mr Anders Wijkman, Vice-Chairman, Tallberg Foundation and member of the Club of Rome.

  5. Panel Discussion: The Global Jobs Pact and Macroeconomic Policy

    Moderated by Mr. Simon Long from The Economist, panellists discussed various issues including how employment can become a macroeconomic objective of the same order as low inflation and deficits. Panellists included: Ms Sandra Polaski, Deputy Under Secretary, Department of Labor, United States; Ms Maria Helena André, Minister of Labour and Social Solidarity, Portugal; Ms Aisha Abdel Hady, Minister of Manpower and Migration, Egypt; Mr Carlos Tomada, Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Argentina; Mr Richard Samans, Managing Director, World Economic Forum; Mr Alberto Nadal, Secretary General, Confederation of Spanish Employers; and Mr Guy Ryder, General Secretary, International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).

  6. School Children in Geneva "Go for the Goal" to End Child Labour

    French and Swiss school children gathered in front of the United Nations European headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland at a special event to mark World Day Against Child Labour and to highlight international efforts, including those by the ILO's International Progamme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC), towards eradicating the worst forms of child labour by 2016.
