  2. UN launches first global partnership to advance rights of indigenous peoples

    The first global UN inter-agency initiative to promote and protect the rights of indigenous peoples was launched today on the occasion of the 10th Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. The initiative, called the United Nations-Indigenous Peoples’ Partnership (UNIPP), is a commitment to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and calls for its full realization through the mobilization of financial cooperation and technical assistance.

  3. Global economic crisis opens up new space for discrimination at work, ILO says

    In the new Global Report on Equality at Work 2011, the International Labour Office (ILO) notes that in spite of continuous positive advances in anti-discrimination legislation, the global economic and social crisis has led to a higher risk of discrimination against certain groups such as migrant labour.

    Events will be held around the world to mark the annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work this year, amid a renewed effort by the International Labour Office (ILO) to emphasize the value of occupational safety and health management systems for continually improving prevention and control of risks at work.

  3. ILO at the IMF and World Bank spring meetings 2011

    Each spring, thousands of government and international officials and representatives of the private sector, civil society and media gather in Washington, DC for the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and IMF. ILO Director-General Juan Somavia presented a statement to the International Monetary and Finance Committee and Development Committee. Mr. Somavia calls for an adjustment of macro-economic policies centered on rights and jobs: “If countries are to grow on a more equitable, sustained and balanced basis, the macro-economic policies will also have to target jobs creation on a priority basis. This is the central policy challenge we face in 2011 worldwide”.

  4. ILO welcomes Indonesian Jobs Pact

    The International Labour Organization welcomed the signing of the Indonesian Jobs Pact designed to bring the benefits of economic growth to every citizen through the creation of decent and productive employment, making the Indonesian economy regionally competitive, while supporting the national policy goals.

  5. ILO presents Global Jobs Pact in Argentina

    At a tripartite meeting on the application in Argentina of the recommendations of the Global Jobs Pact, the ILO reported today that the urban unemployment rate in Latin America and the Caribbean is back to its pre-crisis level of 7.3 per cent.

    The International Labour Office (ILO) is to launch a book analysing the causes and consequences of the global economic and jobs crises and offering policy responses for both developed and developing countries.
