    The ILO-WTO co- publication "Making Globalization Socially Sustainable", launched on 20 September 2011, underlines globalization's potential to stimulate productivity and growth but highlights the importance of pursuing trade, employment and social policies together in order to harness this potential. The book contains contributions from leading academic experts who analyse the various channels through which globalization affects jobs and wages.

  2. Tracking an unseen economy: Major gathering presents new study to help measure economic value of volunteering

    The high-level Global Volunteering Conference taking place in Budapest celebrates the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers, which called on governments to improve their measurement of volunteer work. Participants at sessions on Saturday 17 September will be introduced to the new Manual on the Measurement of Volunteer Work published by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in cooperation with the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Center for Civil Society Studies supported by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme.

  3. World Congress calls for a renewed commitment to build a preventative safety and health culture

    The XIX World Congress on Safety and Health at Work – the largest gathering of health and safety experts in the history of the Congress – held its closing session on Thursday, concluding that decent work is safe work and calling for a renewed commitment to build and maintain a global culture of prevention.

  6. ILO and chocolate and cocoa industry forge new partnership to combat child labour in West Africa

    Eight companies in the chocolate and cocoa industry – ADM, Barry Callebaut, Cargill, Ferrero, The Hershey Company, Kraft Foods, Mars, Incorporated, and Nestlé – have pledged US $2 million to a new Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the International Labour Office (ILO) to combat child labour in cocoa growing communities in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

  7. African ministers call for ILO support to boost employment-intensive investments in infrastructure

    Ministers from some 13 African countries at the 14th Regional Seminar for Labour Based Practitioners have called on the International Labour Organization (ILO) to boost its cooperation with other international partners to support employment-intensive investments in infrastructure and other sectors.
