   ILO says global financial crisis to increase unemployment by 20 million

   The global financial crisis could increase world unemployment by an estimated 20 million women and men, the Director-General of the International Labour Office (ILO) said today. “We need prompt and coordinated government actions to avert a social crisis that could be severe, long-lasting and global”, he added.

   World of Work Report 2008 - Global income inequality gap is vast and growing

   Despite strong economic growth that produced millions of new jobs since the early 1990s, income inequality grew dramatically in most regions of the world and is expected to increase due to the current global financial crisis, according to a new study published today by the research arm of the International Labour Organization.

   Peru: Microinsurance paves the way for social protection in rural areas

   14 October 2008

   A large insurance firm and an association of water irrigation users have teamed up to become the first providers of micro-life insurance for millions of small farmers in Peru. The project, which has received support from the ILO’s Microinsurance Innovation Facility and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will allow a third of rural families in Peru to have access to social protection for the first time. ILO reports from Lima.

   ILO Director-General calls for urgent measures to address “grave consequences” of global financial crisis

   The Director-General of the International Labour Office, Juan Somavia, has called for a series of urgent and coordinated financial, social, regulatory and development measures to avert a slide into recession and address the “grave” consequences of the global financial crisis.

   IFC and ILO to improve labor standards and competitiveness in Vietnam’s apparel industry

   IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, and the International Labour Organization today launched the program to improve working conditions for more than 700,000 workers in the Vietnamese apparel industry and boost the international competitiveness of the sector.

   ILO Gender Equality campaign highlights need for rights, jobs and social security for older women and men

   Despite increasing international attention to ageing societies and older persons, in many societies, older persons and especially older women, still face age discrimination in the workplace and lack access to rights, jobs and social security, the International Labour Office said today on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons.
