   International guidelines launched to protect health workers against HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis

   19 November 2010

   New international guidelines launched by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) aimed at protecting health workers from occupational exposure to HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) and providing access to prevention, treatment and care.

   Mediation to tackle labour dispute at the ILO

   19 November 2010

   After a week of tension the Administration and Staff Union of the ILO have agreed on mediation to resolve their disagreements. Through fruitful dialogue, the parties agreed to the proposal by the Director-General of the ILO, Mr. Juan Somavia, that the Union and Management have recourse to a process of external, independent mediation as a way forward from the current impasse.

   New microinsurance grants to promote innovative technology to protect low-income households

   18 November 2010

   The Microinsurance Innovation Facility at the International Labour Organization, in collaboration with the Z Zurich Foundation, is offering grants of up to US$ 500,000 for microinsurance projects that use technology and other innovations to protect large numbers of low-income households in developing countries.

   Social security plays critical role in times of crisis, but still eludes much of the world

   A new report by the International Labour Office (ILO) says that while social security measures have played a critical role in reducing the social impact of economic crises both now and in the past, basic social security coverage remains out of reach for most of the world, especially in low-income countries.

   Amidst widespread concern about the slow recovery in employment, Mr. Juan Somavia, Director-General of the ILO, urged the G20 Leaders to implement their commitment to the central role of social protection and decent work in global recovery.

   ILO report sees “volatile and uneven recovery” across economic sectors in 2010

   The ILO’s Sectoral Activities Department has released new data showing that employment is recovering unevenly across sectors in the first half of 2010 and will continue to do so over the remainder of the year.

   Amid mixed employment data for 2010, ILO urges G20 to intensify focus on jobs

   08 November 2010

   Amid a “fragile labour market” marked by persistent high unemployment, “slack” jobs growth and declining wages, the International Labour Office urged the Group of 20 to intensify its focus on “productive employment and job-intensive growth policies” at its upcoming summit in Seoul. ILO Director-General Juan Somavia is expected to attend the meeting.

   Experts adopt new ILO Code of Practice on safety and health in agriculture

   Experts representing workers, employers and governments, meeting at the International Labour Organization (ILO), have adopted a new draft Code of Practice on Safety and Health in Agriculture designed to improve working conditions in agriculture which employs some one billion workers worldwide.
