New international guidelines launched by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) aimed at protecting health workers from occupational exposure to HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) and providing access to prevention, treatment and care.

After a week of tension the Administration and Staff Union of the ILO have agreed on mediation to resolve their disagreements. Through fruitful dialogue, the parties agreed to the proposal by the Director-General of the ILO, Mr. Juan Somavia, that the Union and Management have recourse to a process of external, independent mediation as a way forward from the current impasse.

The Microinsurance Innovation Facility at the International Labour Organization, in collaboration with the Z Zurich Foundation, is offering grants of up to US$ 500,000 for microinsurance projects that use technology and other innovations to protect large numbers of low-income households in developing countries.

The ILO’s Sectoral Activities Department has released new data showing that employment is recovering unevenly across sectors in the first half of 2010 and will continue to do so over the remainder of the year.

Amid a “fragile labour market” marked by persistent high unemployment, “slack” jobs growth and declining wages, the International Labour Office urged the Group of 20 to intensify its focus on “productive employment and job-intensive growth policies” at its upcoming summit in Seoul. ILO Director-General Juan Somavia is expected to attend the meeting.
