International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Juan Somavia has called for the creation of quality jobs as a key element of an economic recovery that is shaping up to be uncertain for the Latin American and Caribbean region and for the world as a whole.

ILO and EU to launch new project on improving safety and health at work

Responding to a pressing need to improve the safety and health of workers, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the European Union are launching a new project aimed at reducing occupational accidents and diseases in six countries in Eastern Europe (Ukraine and Moldova), Africa (Zambia and Malawi) and Central America (Honduras and Nicaragua).

Mediation to tackle labour dispute at the ILO

After a week of tension the Administration and Staff Union of the ILO have agreed on mediation to resolve their disagreements. Through fruitful dialogue, the parties agreed to the proposal by the Director-General of the ILO, Mr. Juan Somavia, that the Union and Management have recourse to a process of external, independent mediation as a way forward from the current impasse.
